EMDR is a type of therapy that helps your brain make sense of distressing memories, without having to re-tell the entire story repeatedly. During EMDR, you bring an upsetting memory to mind while gently following side-to-side eye movements or other kinds of bilateral stimulation (like sounds or tapping). This helps your brain process the memory in a healthier way, reducing its emotional intensity and allowing you to feel more calm and in control. EMDR isn’t just for trauma, many people find it helps with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, and overall mental wellbeing too.
The EMDR Institute is dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in the development and promotion of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Founded by Dr. Francine Shapiro, the originator of EMDR, our institute stands at the forefront of mental health treatment, delivering unparalleled EMDR training and education to professionals worldwide.
The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) is the pioneering professional organization for clinicians practicing EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Founded in 1995, it is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit with over 17,000 members across 40 countries, demonstrating its global leadership in advancing EMDR therapy.
