Suicide Prevention

No one wants to worry about the possibility of a mental or substance abuse crisis, but they do happen. That doesn't mean you have to feel powerless. Many healthcare providers suggest  to create a crisis plan, and may suggest that it be shared with friends and family. Ask your loved one if they have developed a plan.

How Nutrition Improves Well-being

Applied psychopharmacotherapy and psychotherapy do not always bring the expected results in the treatment of mental disorders. As a result, other interventions are receiving increasing attention. In recent years, there has been a surge in research on the effects of nutrition on mental status, which may be an important aspect of the prevention of many mental disorders and, at the same time, may lead to a reduction in the proportion of people with mental disorders.

Innovative Treatments for Suicide Prevention

The Critical 10 Minutes That Can Save a Life - Research shows that nearly 50% of people who attempt suicide do so within just 10 minutes of making the decision. This short window highlights the urgent need for early intervention, compassionate support, and limiting access to lethal means. Even a brief pause, a moment of connection, a delay, or a safe space—can save a life. At Aspira Health Global, we’re committed to using this knowledge to inform prevention strategies, crisis response, and public education that helps individuals, families, and communities act in time.

In today’s mental health landscape, innovation matters. Emerging treatments are offering real hope for individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts:

🔹 Spravato® (Esketamine) – FDA-approved, rapid-acting nasal spray for acute suicidal ideation
🔹 IV Ketamine + Psychotherapy – Up to 85% resolution in suicidal thoughts
🔹 EMDR Therapy – Trauma-focused care now available virtually
🔹 ECT & TMS – Life-saving brain stimulation for severe depression
🔹 Psychotherapies (CBT, DBT, CAMS) – Proven to reduce long-term suicide risk
🔹 Plus: microdosing research, hypnosis, MST, and more

📊 New insights show that fast intervention, when paired with sustainable therapies, can change outcomes—and save lives.

AI & Technological Innovations

These tools aim to augment clinical care by providing early detection prompts.

  1. Acoustic + ML Models can detect early suicidal risk from voice features like pitch and jitter
  2. Text-based systems (e.g. PsyGUARD) evaluate counseling transcripts to flag suicidal content and help triage.
  3. Visual-social media analysis using AI (e.g., image cues from Instagram) offers promising early detection of risk patterns.

EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, primarily used to treat trauma and PTSD. EMDR helps individuals reprocess distressing memories by engaging in guided bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, while recalling traumatic events. The goal is to reduce the emotional charge of those memories and help the brain integrate them more adaptively—ultimately lowering anxiety, depression, and in some cases, suicidal ideation.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Repetitive TMS (rTMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Repetitive TMS (rTMS), including accelerated protocols and high-frequency stimulation of the left DLPFC, shows promising results in reducing suicidal ideation among treatment-resistant depression patients. A 2025 meta-analysis found ECT had a greater effect, but TMS still produced significant reductions—especially with accelerated rTMS. TMS is noninvasive, FDA-approved for MDD, and has minimal side effects compared to ECT

Spravato® (Esketamine Nasal Spray)

In early 2025, the FDA approved Spravato for monotherapy in treatment-resistant depression, allowing standalone use without daily antidepressants. It acts rapidly—within hours—making it a vital option for acutely suicidal patients, especially those with MDD and suicidal ideation. Clinical trials show significant reductions in depression severity and suicidal thoughts at 24 hours, 4 hours, and up to 28 days. It’s available under strict monitoring programs (REMS) due to sedation/dissociation risk .

Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS)

CAMS is a structured therapy approach directly targeting suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Developed by David A. Jobes and colleagues; supported by multiple RCTs and meta-analyses. Works effectively across inpatient, military, and civilian populations.

Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (BCBT-SP / BCBT-I)

Created by M. David Rudd, focusing on the “suicidal mode” model. Shown to reduce post-discharge suicide attempts by ~60%, as well as ED visits and readmissions. Integrates crisis response planning and safety planning tools.

Learn More

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

ECT is a gold-standard for rapidly reducing suicidality, particularly in severe or treatment-resistant depression . Response rates for TRD range from 60–80%, and remission rates are 50–60%, with lower relapse and suicide risk post-treatment. It's recommended when rapid intervention is critical (e.g., suicidal with delusions, severe psychomotor retardation)

Learn More

Microdosing Psychedelics

Sub-perceptual doses of psilocybin/LSD are often reported to improve mood, anxiety, and creativity—though rigorous studies are limited. Population surveys link lifetime classic psychedelic use (including psilocybin) with lower odds of suicidal ideation and attempts. However, microdosing research is preliminary and should be approached carefully, especially given legal and safety concerns.

Learn More

Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

Evidence shows hypnosis can enhance emotional flexibility and treat symptoms like pain, anxiety, and depression. While formal studies directly on suicidal ideation are limited, hypnotherapy has been successfully applied in individual cases focused on depression and suicidality. It's generally used as a complementary tool, enhancing other evidence-based treatments.

Transcendental Meditation Technique

Transcendental Meditation is backed by compelling, large-scale evidence especially in veterans, refugees, and prison populations. TM delivers rapid PTSD and depression relief, matches exposure therapy, and significantly lowers suicidality.
